RESUMO

Esse trabalho discute a relação entre a obesidade, a cirurgia bariátrica e a saúde bucal, e de qual maneira isso pode desencadear a doença periodontal. Destaca-se que a obesidade pode sim aumentar o risco de doença periodontal e, por mais que a cirurgia bariátrica seja eficaz na redução de peso a longo prazo, pode ocasionar diversos efeitos negativos na saúde bucal, principalmente se tornar um fator de risco para qualquer tipo de doença periodontal. Dados esses fatos, ressalta-se a importância de um cirurgião-dentista dentro de uma equipe multidisciplinar para acompanhar o pré e o pós-operatório dos pacientes submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica, a fim de minimizar os danos na saúde bucal. Concluiu-se que a obesidade e a cirurgia bariátrica não são fatores determinantes da doença periodontal, mas se tornam fatores de risco, sendo extremamente importante o acompanhamento de um cirurgião-dentista para tratamento preventivo e/ou de danos já instalados.

ABSTRACT

This work discusses the relationship between obesity, bariatric surgery, and oral health, and how it can trigger periodontal disease. It is highlighted that obesity can indeed increase the risk of periodontal disease and, although bariatric surgery is effective in long-term weight reduction, it can lead to various negative effects on oral health, particularly becoming a risk factor for any type of periodontal disease. Given these facts, the importance of a dentist within a multidisciplinary team to monitor the pre and postoperative care of patients undergoing bariatric surgery is emphasized in order to minimize oral health damage. It’s concluded that obesity and bariatric surgery are not determining factors for periodontal disease, but rather become risk factors, making it extremely important to have the follow-up of a dentist for preventive and/or already installed damage treatment.
